Description:
The 2023 Climate Action Plan calls for an expansion of the indigenous biomethane sector through anaerobic digestion, reaching up to 5.7TWh of biomethane - this could require the construction of 150-200 AD plants. Bord na Móna has one bio-methane project in its development pipeline. The Anaerobic Digestor project is located on BnM lands in Cúl na Móna, County Laois. The plant would treat up to 80,000 tonnes of non-hazardous, biodegradable, organic materials per annum. The renewable-gas facility would convert the organic materials into biogas which would be further upgraded to Biomethane for injection to the national gas grid. The project obtained planning permission from Laois County Council in January 2021. This was subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála who upheld the planning in May 2022 and a process to seek leave for a Judicial Review is underway.
