Born close to the village of Kilkea, between Castledermot and Athy, County Kildare in 1874, Ernest Shackleton is renowned for his courage, his care of his comrades, his immense contribution as an explorer, and for the epic escape from the shipwrecked Endurance where, against all odds, Shackleton brought his entire Polar team home across ice and ocean without losing a man. Located in the heritage town of Athy, Co Kildare, The Shackleton Museum is less than an hour from Dublin, served by commuter trains from Dublin-s largest railway hub Heuston Station. The new Museum will tell the story of Shackleton-s epic adventures using the latest technology combined with the Museum-s unsurpassed artefact collections, gathered and curated for over 100 years. Research, education, and outreach... This new development also sees the creation of a dedicated research wing, including facilities for archive storage and study which will be available to Polar scholars from across the globe. A new outreach and education programme will take the Shackleton story to thousands of school children every year.
