  • Description:
  • The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM, the Contracting Authority) and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) are the competent authorities for the implementation of legislation governing Official Controls of Genetically Modified Feed and Food (GMFF), respectively. Ireland has a legal obligation to appoint National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) under European Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/625. Regulation (EU) 2017/625 on official controls, ensures the verification of compliance with food and feed law, plant and animal health and animal welfare laws. The appointed National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for GMFF has the duty of informing and advising the Contracting Authority, by providing scientific and technical assistance, and by assisting in food/feedborne incidents and outbreak situations by performing confirmatory analyses. The NRL has also responsibility to assist and advise feed and food laboratories and the Contracting Authority to ensure a harmonised, effective, proportionate, and risk-based approach to feed and food regulation and enforcement.
